The Vedic Society of Southampton traces its roots back to 1971, a pivotal year when a group of passionate Hindus in Southampton united to perpetuate Sanatan Dharm - embracing its traditions, beliefs, and festivals. Initially gathering in homes, the growing community soon necessitated a larger space, leading to the hosting of pujas and festivals in a Church Hall in Northam.
The culmination of their efforts and dedication occurred on 11 August 1984, marked by the joyous inauguration of the Vedic Society Hindu Temple. This auspicious occasion was celebrated with grandeur, emphasizing the society's commitment to fostering the rich tapestry of Sanatan Dharma within the heart of Southampton.
At Vedic Society Hindu Temple, we uphold the essence of Hindu Sanskriti (Hinduism). Originating near the River Indus, Hinduism, also known as Sanatan Dharma, spans India, Nepal, and beyond, uniting diverse beliefs under the common thread of dharma.
Central to our faith are the Vedas and their supplements, derived from the Sanskrit word 'Veda,' meaning 'knowledge.' Most importantly, we hold a collective belief in the One Supreme Being (Brahman), whose diverse qualities manifest through various deities.
Rooted in the cycle of samsara governed by Karma, Hindus understand existence as a continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The soul (Atman) undergoes successive lives, shaped by past actions. Hindus believe that each person is intrinsically divine and the purpose of life is to seek and realize the divinity within all of us.
Throughout the year, we joyously celebrate holy days and festivals. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and Holi, the Festival of Colors, are among the cherished celebrations that bind our community together.
In Southampton, our Hindu community constitutes a significant minority, numbering in the thousands. Comprising individuals directly from India or Nepal, as well as those from East Africa and diverse corners of the globe, our community reflects a rich tapestry of backgrounds.
At the heart of this vibrant community is our temple - an essential hub and a lively community center. Regular gatherings during festivals and various activities foster a sense of togetherness, creating a close-knit community that transcends geographical origins and backgrounds.
At Vedic Society Hindu Temple, we are committed to upholding the values of Hinduism and promoting the spiritual growth of our community. Our vision is to create a world where everyone has access to the teachings and traditions of Hinduism.
Vedic Society is managed by a board of Trustees who are elected by the members of our community. They work tirelessly to ensure that Vedic Society Hindu Temple remains a welcoming and inclusive place for all.
We offer a variety of services and offerings including daily aarti, bhajan, and prasad distribution. We have religious and cultural events throughout the year.
